Community
Planting Program
In an ongoing
effort to continue "greening" Mechanicsburg, the Borough has kicked off
its new Community Planting Program. The purpose of this program is to
increase the number of trees in the Borough by providing community
members with information and assistance on how to purchase, plant, and
maintain trees.
Working with the
Mechanicsburg Borough Council, the Borough's Shade Tree Commission (STC)
and Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) are spearheading this new
program.
In order to make it
very easy to take advantage of this program, the STC and EAC developed
several helpful resources, each of which is posted here.
-
Community Planting Program Brochure
- Provides an overview of the
program, available printed resource materials, steps to get involved,
and contact information.
-
"The
Value of Trees Statistics Sheet"
- Provides an overview of the
many benefits of trees, including their economic contributions, energy
savings, environmental contributions, and social contributions.
-
"STC Rules &
Regulations" - Provides a
complete list of the Borough's newly expanded and approved list of trees
that can be planted in either a tree lawn (the space between the
sidewalk and street) or in a yard. This information is organized by size
of tree and planting condition (i.e., where a specific type of tree
would be most appropriate). This resource also includes a list of
considerations to follow when planting a new tree.
-
"How to Plant a Tree"
- Three files are included here, depending on the type of tree that you
will plant. A simple "how-to" guide is provided for a
bare root
tree,
balled and burlapped
(B&B) tree, and a
container
grown tree.
-
"Caring
for Your Tree"
- Provides a brief, one-page
summary on how to water, weed, protect, and prune your new tree.
-
"University of
Connecticut Plant Database" -
This extensive resource includes information about many of the trees on
our shade tree list, among a variety of other species. You may utilize
this resource to learn more about our approved trees, see what they will
look like when mature, etc. Simply click here (www.hort.uconn.edu/Plants)
and go to the "Plant Pages" section. You can browse by a tree’s common
name or Latin name.
-
List of Local Nurseries
- Provides the names and contact
information for local nurseries that have a variety of our approved
trees available. (The Borough does not endorse this list; it is provided
for informational purposes only.)
-
More Information
- For more information, or with questions, please contact Darryl
Kenes, Chair of the Shade Tree Commission, at the Borough office at
(717) 691-3310.
Success of Tree Giveaway and
Local Tree Plantings
The Borough participated in the
Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival at the end of April with a tree
giveaway as part of its community planting program. We extend sincere
thanks to everyone who picked up a free tree sapling at this event to
plant in their yards. We gave away nearly 100 trees!
In addition, on April 18, the STC
and EAC organized a tree planting in which nine trees were planted in
the Borough along West Coover, East Marble, East Main, East Portland,
and West Keller streets. We also thank the residents who partnered with
us in this endeavor. If you are interested in participating in a future
tree planting, please contact the Borough office.
